Small Animal Acupuncture

Acupuncture treatments center on restoring the body's balance. This may refer to balance of the mind or body. It works by changing and redirecting the flow of Qi throughout the body. Qi, in traditional Chinese medicine, is defined as the life force that is inside all of us. It's the vital energy that animates our bodies. Our balance of Yin and Yang is directly affected by the flow of Qi in our bodies. When Yin and/or Yang become unbalanced, or the flow of Qi is disrupted, disease states can result.
By placing needles at key points on the body, it is possible to send messages to the brain that encourage the body to generate substances that stimulate the animal's natural healing process. The needles help guide the body's Qi to the places the body needs it most. There has been a great increase in the research on the effects of acupuncture. It has been shown that many acupoints are located in areas where there is a high density of nerve endings, blood flow and lymph flow. There have been numerous studies showing that acupuncture can induce the release of a multitude of neurotransmitters, including serotonin and other endorphins.
Acupuncture is most often spoken of in relation to diminishing pain, especially chronic pain, but it is also a good adjunctive treatment for many of the common diseases affecting our pets.
